The aim of this work package is to conceptualize and develop a reference model for Smart Lean Operations. The model will provide a standard cross-industry diagnostic tool for the design and implementation Smart Lean Operations in European industry. The reference model describes the elements of Lean practices associated with satisfying a customer’s demand, which include flow efficiency, teamwork, zero-defect manufacturing, and supplier development. Use of the model includes analysing the current state of a company’s practices and goals, quantifying operational performance, and comparing company practices and challenges.
This reference model enables users to address, improve, and communicate smart Lean operations within a plant and between all interested parties in a network. The model will consist of three main pillars:
- Process mapping and reengineering
- Maturity assessment
- Best practices and industrial skillset
The model will build upon the knowledge and experiences about practices from WP1, WP4, and WP6. The model will be tested and evaluated by the industrial partners, and industry groups will be formed in the Lean 4.0 community to continuously collect best practices information that companies can use to elevate their Smart Lean Operations. The implementation of the model will be supported by a standard implementation process (with defined phases and decisions gates) for Smart Lean operations that builds upon the Blended NAL methodology.
